transmission: the distance between us matters
COVID-19 has shaped 2020. We are separated from our work, separated from our friends and loved ones. Isolation has been what’s necessary during these unprecedented times. As filmmakers, we were having discussions about how we could create something meaningful about living during this worldwide pandemic while none of us can be in the same room. That’s when friends from a chance meeting at the deadCenter film festival years ago presented the perfect answer - Transmission: The Distance Between Us Matters. This film project is the brainchild of three fantastic New Zealand filmmakers - Scott Granville, Dan Inglis, and Jeremy Mayall. They organized this process with filmmakers from all over the world. There were creators from 11 countries, and in the end, 31 short films were created across one month!
The Transmission project was set up so the process used to make these films is part of the conversation about this strange time. These films were created in four isolated steps across one week.
1. Writing (Writer)
2. Performance (Actor)
3. Image creation (Filmmaker/Moving Image Artist)
4. Music and/or sound design creation (Composer/Sound Designer)
The filmmakers signed up for one of the four parts, then “teams” were randomly assigned. We are separated, so each step of the process was also separate. Each step was completed independently and without any communication between any of the contributors. No one even knew who was working on each project until the films were finished. The results have been surprising and magical. Chad and Trey participated in three projects each without any collaboration between us (which is a new experience for us!). This was an amazing project, and we loved being a part of it. Maybe more than that, we loved seeing the incredible work contributed by the talented group of Best Part collaborators who took part as well! The extraordinary group of Tim Grogan, Ben Jackson, Jason “Mars” Marsden, Mac Cushing, Caleb Dirks, James Mathias, Bryan Levay, and Kristjan Knigge knocked it out of the park and all made fantastic films!
